![]() In the episode, there is a big splash of water when the torpedo hits. When a fast & heavy object hits the hull of a ship, even if the warhead doesn't detonate, there's gonna be a some effects from the impact. Porter and accidentally put a real long lance in the water? Did all of the practice torpedoes get damaged, leaving only a single long lance, a fact that the torpedo crew didn't realize until they were committed on the torpedo attack? I realize that this is pretty pointless but I must know. Did the practice torpedo still have an active warhead that was less powerful than a Type 93 and the mind control virus made it so the crew of Saurushima didn't take any damage control measures, causing it to sink? Did the torpedo crew mess up and pull a William D. Why did it sink? We clearly see an explosion when the torpedo hits. But it is revealed that Saurushima does in fact sink. The characters explicitly state that the dummy/practice torpedo shouldn't sink Saurushima, so they launch a "dummy torpedo," score a hit, Saurushima slows down, and Harekaze escapes. So, for the first episode of High School Fleet, after coming under fire, from Saurushima (I apologize if I have misspelt this name), their instructor ship, and receiving no response to their attempts to communicate with Saurushima, the crew of the Harekaze decide to launch a dummy/practice torpedo at Saurushima to slow it down so they can escape.
